Okay, as you may have guessed, I am a Classical Music nerd and art lover; no surprise coming from someone who would title a blog "All That Classical." Of late, I have come across a number of people asking pretty much the same question, but sugarcoated in a way that makes each person feel like they are contributing to some greater conversation about how to fix our floundering arts scene in the United States: what happened?? It seems like ever since I was a boy, not 20 years ago, there has been the same rhetoric about "classical music sales are down!", "our concert attendance is not bringing in revenue!", "why can't we compete?!"...and so on... These are all true observations, but it doesn't get to the heart of the issues that we need to address to create a profitable situation within the industry. Instead of wondering how we got to this point, it's really more a matter of what do we do now; where are the trends in music going, who has become the most successful at creating an image in the US, and by what means can we in the classical world use to adapt to create a prosperous future?
This gets to the heart of why I have created this blog. There are far too many examples of fine artistry on the internet that have gone unnoticed or, frankly, ignored by the classical industry. It it therefore the task of this blogger to bring to light the online genius and craft created within classical music via the internet. I will research and post many outstanding examples of film, montage, parody, and philosophical discussions with hope of highlighting the qualitative nature of the Online Classical Culture. Whether we like or not, Grandpa, the computer is the future of Classical Music (inside joke...)
